Fire training

All employees and stewards should be given suitable training. 

This will ensure that those responsible will know what to do in the event of an emergency.

This must include:

  • how to raise the alarm;
  • the action required by them upon discovering an outbreak of fire or hearing the fire alarm;
  • the evacuation procedure, including any special considerations that will apply to disabled visitors or those with impaired hearing or sight;
  • the arrangements for calling the fire brigade;
  • the location of and, if appropriate, the safe use of firefighting equipment;
  • the location of escape routes, particularly those not in regular use and the importance of always keeping all escape routes free from obstructions at all times;
  • How to open all doors;
  • the importance of keeping fire doors closed in order to prevent the spread of fire;
  • the reason for not using lifts (other than those specifically provided or adapted for use by people with disabilities, in accordance with BS 5588-8:1999); and following a suitable risk assessment);
  • the importance of general fire precautions and good housekeeping.


  • Have your employees received any fire safety training?
  • Have you carried out a fire drill recently?
  • Are employees aware of specific tasks if there is a fire?
  • Are you maintaining a record of training sessions?
